Finance tutoring for Washington & Lee students.

Managerial Finance is a core course for the Business Administration major at the Williams School, and the catalog lists it as FIN 221 while the registrar's pages now show FIN 2000. Advising suggests finishing it by the end of sophomore year, which puts the course right before majors declare.

Where students get stuck.

Sophomore-year timing

Majors declare around January of sophomore year, and finance comes right before that. We use the course to make sure your finance foundation is solid before you choose.

Two course numbers

The catalog and the registrar's pages use different numbers for the same course. Send me your syllabus so we work from the one your section uses.

Setup and wording

Even strong students lose points on word problems with extra numbers. We practice finding the unknown and matching the rate to the payment period.

How a session works

Diagnosis first. Then the fix.

  1. 01

    Before we meet

Send me what you're stuck on: a problem set, slides, your last midterm, a practice exam, last week's quiz.

  2. 02

    On Zoom

You walk me through a problem out loud. It usually takes a few minutes to hear where the reasoning goes sideways. We fix that piece and rebuild from there, so you know why each step works.

  3. 03

    Before we finish

The real test: a fresh problem with new numbers and different wording, the way a midterm would ask it, and you solve it yourself. I don't complete assignments or hand over answers. You leave able to do the work.

Questions

Before you book.

Is it FIN 221 or FIN 2000?

The catalog entry I read says FIN 221 Managerial Finance, and the registrar's pages show FIN 2000. It is likely the same course under old and new numbering, but I could not confirm that, so check your syllabus.

Is Managerial Finance required for the Business Administration major?

The degree guidelines I found list it as a required core course. Requirements change by class year, so check the current ones for yours.

Which calculator should I bring to the exam?

I could not find a published policy, so check your syllabus. We practice on the one your instructor allows.

Is tutoring allowed under my school's honor code?

Tutoring on concepts and practice problems is generally fine, but policies on graded work vary by course. I don't complete graded assignments. Check your syllabus's collaboration policy, and if you're unsure, ask your professor.
