Any statePersonal Finance
About 30 states now require a personal finance course to graduate. Paychecks, taxes, credit, college costs, and investing, from your student’s own class.
RegionBoston and New England
Massachusetts doesn't require a personal finance course to graduate, so plenty of strong students reach college without ever learning how interest, credit, or investing work. Others are taking AP Business with Personal Finance in its first years. Either way, I work from whatever your student's class uses.
RegionNew York
New York now requires personal finance instruction, and students starting ninth grade in 2026 to 2027 must get it before they graduate. Schools can deliver it however they choose, so what your student actually learns varies a lot from school to school.
RegionCalifornia
California now requires a one-semester personal finance course to graduate from public high school, starting with the class of 2031. Schools begin offering it in 2027 to 2028. Students who want a head start, or who are taking AP Business with Personal Finance now, can get ahead of it.
RegionConnecticut
Starting with the class of 2027, Connecticut public high school students need a half-credit course in personal financial management to graduate. It covers banking, saving, investing, and how credit and debit cards really work, and each district builds its own version.
