IB Diploma · Business Management

IB Business Management, numbers included.

Most of IB Business Management is reading a case and making an argument. Then Paper 2 asks for a cash flow forecast, a set of ratios, or an investment appraisal, and the marks get harder to earn. I tutored IB students in grad school and now teach finance from high school through MBA, so that's the part of the course I make easy.

Where students get stuck.

Paper 2 is the math paper

Paper 2 is built around quantitative questions and counts for 35% of the grade at SL and 30% at HL. Students who can argue well still lose marks on a ratio they set up wrong.

Calculating isn't evaluating

A correct payback period gets some of the marks. The rest come from saying what it means for the business and what it leaves out. We practice both halves.

The research project

The internal assessment is a business research project worth 30% at SL and 20% at HL. I help students pick a workable question and understand the finance in it. The writing stays theirs.

For parents

Parents usually book. Send me your student's level, the topic that's giving them trouble, and when their exams are. Your student joins on Zoom at a time that works in your time zone, and we work from their own class notes and past questions.

How a session works

Diagnosis first. Then the fix.

  1. 01

    Before we meet

Send me what you're stuck on: a problem set, slides, your last midterm, a practice exam, last week's quiz.

  2. 02

    On Zoom

You walk me through a problem out loud. It usually takes a few minutes to hear where the reasoning goes sideways. We fix that piece and rebuild from there, so you know why each step works.

  3. 03

    Before we finish

The real test: a fresh problem with new numbers and different wording, the way a midterm would ask it, and you solve it yourself. I don't complete assignments or hand over answers. You leave able to do the work.

Questions

Before you book.

Do you tutor both SL and HL?

Yes. HL adds topics like debt/equity ratio analysis and budgets, plus Paper 3 on a social enterprise. We focus on whatever your student's level is assessed on.

Which syllabus do you teach?

The current guide, first assessed in 2024. It has five units: introduction to business management, human resource management, finance and accounts, marketing, and operations management.

Will you write or edit the internal assessment?

No. I explain the business and finance ideas and help students check their own reasoning. The research project has to be the student's own work under IB rules.

Is tutoring allowed under my school's honor code?

Tutoring on concepts and practice problems is generally fine, but policies on graded work vary by course. I don't complete graded assignments. Check your syllabus's collaboration policy, and if you're unsure, ask your professor.
