Investment banking recruiting resources for undergraduates

Most banking recruiting advice sits in club handbooks, student-run sites and trackers that change by the week. This page sorts the useful ones so you can see which application windows are open, how students at other schools prepare, and where to practice technical questions.

What this career involves

What professionals do
Advise companies on mergers, acquisitions and raising money, and build the models and presentations behind each deal.
Skills that help
  • Accounting and the three statements
  • Valuation: DCF, comparable companies, precedent deals
  • Excel speed and accuracy
  • Clear writing and presenting
Typical routes in
Most analysts start through a summer internship in the year before they graduate, often after campus networking and first-round interviews. Some firms recruit sophomores into early programs.

Who this fits

Sophomores and juniors aiming at summer analyst programs, and anyone who wants to know which firms recruit from their school before they spend a semester on networking.

A learning sequence

  1. Open an internship tracker and write down the three application windows closest to today.
  2. Read one student-written recruiting guide end to end before you read any forum thread.
  3. Do ten accounting questions out loud. If you stall on the three statements, go back to your accounting course first.

Questions

Quick answers.

When do banking internship applications open?

It varies by firm and year, and some firms now open applications for a summer two years ahead. Use a tracker for the current list and confirm every date on the employer's own careers page.

Do I need to attend a target school to get an interview?

Target school lists describe where analysts have come from in the past, not who can apply. Students from other schools do get offers, usually with more networking and earlier preparation.

What do technical interview questions cover?

Accounting and the three statements, enterprise value versus equity value, DCF, comparable companies and basic M&A and LBO logic. These sit on top of your corporate finance and accounting courses.

Need a hand with the course side?

Finance coursework and technical interview prep.

Resources only go so far when a concept will not click. I tutor corporate finance and accounting one-on-one on Zoom, and I run focused technical interview practice for students preparing for banking recruiting. No promises about offers: the work is understanding the material well enough to explain it.
