Fixed income and bond market resources for students

Bond math in a textbook is tidy. The real market has dealers, repo funding, municipal disclosure and daily issuance. These resources are mostly official sources, so the numbers come from the people who publish them.

Students taking a bond valuation unit who want to see real yields, and those aiming at sales and trading, rates or capital markets desks.

A learning sequence

  1. Price one bond by hand, then compare your yield with a current Treasury of similar maturity.
  2. Read a primer on how repo works before you read a dealer statistics table.
  3. Look up a municipal bond's disclosure documents and note the risks the issuer lists.

Questions

Quick answers.

Why do bond prices fall when rates rise?

A bond's coupon is fixed. When new bonds pay more, the older one must sell for less to give a buyer the same yield.

What is a primary dealer?

A firm that trades directly with the Federal Reserve Bank of New York and is expected to bid at Treasury auctions.

Is municipal bond data public?

Yes. The MSRB's EMMA site publishes disclosures and trade data for municipal securities.

Need a hand with the course side?

Finance coursework and technical interview prep.

Resources only go so far when a concept will not click. I tutor corporate finance and accounting one-on-one on Zoom, and I run focused technical interview practice for students preparing for banking recruiting. No promises about offers: the work is understanding the material well enough to explain it.
