Private equity and LBO study resources for students

Private equity interviews lean on the leveraged buyout: how much debt a company can carry, what returns follow, and what could break the deal. The resources below range from timed paper LBO exercises to research on small-company acquisitions.

  • Reading a business quickly
  • Debt structures

Typical routes in
Large buyout firms commonly hire analysts from banking or consulting programs. Smaller funds and search funds may hire earlier, and requirements vary firm to firm.

Who this fits

Students who already have banking or consulting experience on the horizon, and students curious about buying a small business instead.

A learning sequence

  1. Do one paper LBO by hand with round numbers before opening Excel.
  2. Learn the five levers of LBO returns: entry multiple, exit multiple, growth, margin and debt paydown.
  3. Skim a search fund study to see how acquisition returns are measured at the small end.

Questions

Quick answers.

Can an undergraduate go straight into private equity?

Large buyout funds mostly hire analysts after a banking or similar program. Smaller firms, growth equity and search funds offer other routes, and their requirements vary by firm.

What is a paper LBO?

A timed exercise where you estimate the return on a buyout using mental math and a few lines of notes instead of a spreadsheet. It tests whether you understand the mechanics.

How is IRR different from the multiple of money?

The multiple ignores time and IRR includes it. A 2x return in three years and a 2x return in seven years look the same on the multiple and very different on IRR.

Need a hand with the course side?

Finance coursework and technical interview prep.

Resources only go so far when a concept will not click. I tutor corporate finance and accounting one-on-one on Zoom, and I run focused technical interview practice for students preparing for banking recruiting. No promises about offers: the work is understanding the material well enough to explain it.
