Where students get stuck.

Prerequisites that stack

FIN 231 assumes ACC 111 and ECN 150. When a finance question goes wrong, the gap is often in accounting or economics, so we trace it back.

Setting up for the major

Admission prerequisites for the finance major include accounting, economics, math, and a business course. FIN 231 should feel solid before FIN 232.

Wording traps

A quarterly rate used for monthly payments, an extra number put in to distract you. We practice the setup before the calculation.

How a session works

Diagnosis first. Then the fix.

  1. 01

    Before we meet

Send me what you're stuck on: a problem set, slides, your last midterm, a practice exam, last week's quiz.

  2. 02

    On Zoom

You walk me through a problem out loud. It usually takes a few minutes to hear where the reasoning goes sideways. We fix that piece and rebuild from there, so you know why each step works.

  3. 03

    Before we finish

The real test: a fresh problem with new numbers and different wording, the way a midterm would ask it, and you solve it yourself. I don't complete assignments or hand over answers. You leave able to do the work.

Questions

Before you book.

Is FIN 231 required for all business majors?

The bulletin shows it in the business core on the Finance B.S. page. I did not confirm it for every major, so check your own program requirements.

What comes after FIN 231 for finance majors?

FIN 232 Intermediate Finance and FIN 203 Applied Quantitative Analysis for Finance are required major courses, per the bulletin.

Which calculator should I use?

I could not find a published policy, so check your syllabus. We practice on the one your exams allow.

Is tutoring allowed under my school's honor code?

Tutoring on concepts and practice problems is generally fine, but policies on graded work vary by course. I don't complete graded assignments. Check your syllabus's collaboration policy, and if you're unsure, ask your professor.
