Investments

BUSI 420 tutoring for Liberty students.

BUSI 420 Investments takes the finance you learned in BUSI 320 and aims it at securities and portfolios. I took the course at Liberty, and I helped Liberty students through it as a tutor for three years, so I know which ideas click fast and which ones need a second pass.

The course

BUSI 420 · Investments

Three credit hours, offered residential and online. The catalog describes a survey of corporate securities, financial securities, security markets, and investment and portfolio analysis and administration, with investment companies, commodity markets, and the stock exchange also examined.

Before you take it

Prerequisite

BUSI 320. Valuation and the basics of stocks and dividends from that course are assumed from the first week.

Why it feels different

A survey, not one method

Because it surveys many securities and markets, BUSI 420 covers a lot of ground. The challenge is keeping each type of security straight and knowing what a question is asking.

Practice before the first quiz

Portfolio and security questions start from valuation. The guides below cover that foundation, and the calculators let you check your own work.

Where students get stuck.

Many instruments, one framework

Stocks, bonds, funds, and commodities each have their own vocabulary. We tie them to a single question, what is this worth and what does it risk, so the survey stops feeling like a list.

Portfolio ideas

Risk, return, and diversification are easy to nod along to and hard to apply. We work small portfolios by hand until the idea holds on a calculator.

Terminology on exams

Survey courses test whether you can tell similar things apart. We build comparison sheets so you can separate the lookalikes quickly.

I took this course

I earned an A in Investments at Liberty on my way to a summa cum laude finance degree, and I tutored Liberty finance students for three years afterward. I can't tell you your professor's exams, but I can show you how to organize the material so a survey course feels manageable.

How a session works

Diagnosis first. Then the fix.

  1. 01

    Before we meet

Send me what you're stuck on: a problem set, slides, your last midterm, a practice exam, last week's quiz.

  2. 02

    On Zoom

You walk me through a problem out loud. It usually takes a few minutes to hear where the reasoning goes sideways. We fix that piece and rebuild from there, so you know why each step works.

  3. 03

    Before we finish

The real test: a fresh problem with new numbers and different wording, the way a midterm would ask it, and you solve it yourself. I don't complete assignments or hand over answers. You leave able to do the work.
