Personal Financial Literacy
Earning, spending, saving, credit, borrowing, investing and insurance. A brand-new requirement means schools are still settling on materials, so we work from your student's syllabus.
Texas students who start ninth grade in 2026 to 2027 or later must pass a half-credit personal financial literacy course to graduate, so this year's freshmen in Carroll and Grapevine-Colleyville ISD are the first class it applies to. I tutor that course, AP Business and college finance, one-on-one over Zoom.

Utilization, payment history and what a first card should look like. The math is short, and getting it right early pays off for years.
College Board's newest AP course, with the first exam in May 2027. I tutor the subject whether or not your student's school offers the course yet.
Students home from UT, A&M, SMU, TCU or anywhere else often bring their hardest class with them. Break is the best time to fix it.
What a student studies in finance depends on the school and the state. Checked October 29, 2026.
Under HB 27, a half-credit personal financial literacy course is required for public high school students who enter ninth grade in 2026 to 2027 or later. Private schools set their own requirements.
A few of the high schools families in the area attend, named for context only. Online Finance Tutor isn't affiliated with any of them. Your assigned school depends on your address and district.
A student with a $3,000 credit limit and a $900 balance is using 30% of their available credit. Paying the balance down to $300 before the statement closes drops that to 10%. Same card, same spending, a very different picture for the credit report.
Students know a credit score matters but not what moves it. Utilization is the easiest lever to understand and the easiest to get wrong.
The same compounding that grows savings grows debt. Seeing both sides with the same numbers is when it clicks.
Texas has no state income tax, but federal tax, Social Security and Medicare still come out. Students are often surprised by the gap between gross and net pay.
Parents usually book. Your student joins on Zoom after school or on a weekend, around practice and games. We're on Central time. Send me the course, the school and what's giving your student trouble, and I'll tell you honestly whether I can help.
Send me what you're stuck on: a problem set, slides, your last midterm, a practice exam, last week's quiz.
You walk me through a problem out loud. It usually takes a few minutes to hear where the reasoning goes sideways. We fix that piece and rebuild from there, so you know why each step works.
The real test: a fresh problem with new numbers and different wording, the way a midterm would ask it, and you solve it yourself. I don't complete assignments or hand over answers. You leave able to do the work.

No. Every session is on Zoom, so there's no travel and scheduling fits around practice and activities. I schedule in Central time for Texas families.
HB 27 applies to students who enter ninth grade in 2026 to 2027 or later. Older students aren't covered by it, though many schools already offer personal finance as an elective.
Ask the school. The course is brand new for 2026 to 2027 and each school decides whether to offer it. I tutor the subject either way, including students studying for the exam on their own.
No. I work from the teacher's materials and never complete graded work, so sessions support the class instead of replacing it.
Tutoring on concepts and practice problems is generally fine, but policies on graded work vary by course. I don't complete graded assignments. Check your syllabus's collaboration policy, and if you're unsure, ask your professor.
Tell me your course and what isn’t clicking. I’ll tell you honestly whether I can help.
