Financial Literacy for Teens
Budgeting, banking, credit, loans, taxes and investing basics. Students who want more than a pass, or who are stuck on the interest math, get the same topics one-on-one.
Every Prince George's County public high school student needs half a credit in financial literacy to graduate, and the district schedules it from tenth grade on. I tutor that course, AP Business with Personal Finance, and college finance, one-on-one over Zoom.

PGCPS offers a half-credit Advanced Financial Literacy elective for juniors and seniors, plus a Business Management and Finance program. We work from your student's own syllabus.
College Board's newest AP course, with the first exam in May 2027. I tutor the subject whether or not your student's school offers the course yet.
Students home from College Park, Bowie State or anywhere else often bring their hardest class with them. Winter break and summer are the best time to fix corporate finance before the next exam.
What a student studies in finance depends on the school and the state. Checked October 29, 2026.
Maryland sets financial literacy standards for grades 3 to 12 but leaves the graduation requirement to each county. PGCPS requires 0.5 credit, usually Financial Literacy for Teens, and recommends it in tenth grade. Private and Catholic schools set their own rules. A 2026 state bill would add a statewide course from the class of 2030. It had not passed when this page was checked.
A few of the high schools families in the area attend, named for context only. Online Finance Tutor isn't affiliated with any of them, and your assigned public school depends on your address, so check with PGCPS.
A student works 15 hours a week at $16 an hour. Gross pay is $240. Social Security and Medicare take 7.65%, which is $18.36, before any federal, state or county income tax comes out. Explaining that gap between gross and net pay is one of the first things a financial literacy course asks for, and it's a good place to start a session.
Simple interest is one line of math. Compound interest, credit card APR and loan payments stack the same idea, and that stacking is where grades usually slip.
Gross pay, net pay, withholding and a W-4 look nothing like math class. Once a student has worked through one real pay stub, the unit gets much easier.
What moves a credit score, what a car loan really costs, and why paying only the minimum takes years. We do the math with real numbers, not definitions.
Parents usually book. Your student joins on Zoom from home after school or on a weekend, with no drive at rush hour. Send me the course name, the school and what's giving your student trouble, and I'll tell you honestly whether I can help.
Send me what you're stuck on: a problem set, slides, your last midterm, a practice exam, last week's quiz.
You walk me through a problem out loud. It usually takes a few minutes to hear where the reasoning goes sideways. We fix that piece and rebuild from there, so you know why each step works.
The real test: a fresh problem with new numbers and different wording, the way a midterm would ask it, and you solve it yourself. I don't complete assignments or hand over answers. You leave able to do the work.

No. Every session is on Zoom, so there's no travel and scheduling fits around practice, work and activities. We're on the same Eastern time zone.
No. PGCPS graduation rules cover PGCPS schools. Catholic and independent schools set their own requirements, so we work from whatever course your student is actually taking.
Ask the school. The course is brand new for 2026 to 2027 and each school decides whether to offer it. I tutor the subject either way, including students studying for the exam on their own.
No. I work from the teacher's materials and never complete graded work, so sessions support the class instead of replacing it.
Tutoring on concepts and practice problems is generally fine, but policies on graded work vary by course. I don't complete graded assignments. Check your syllabus's collaboration policy, and if you're unsure, ask your professor.
Tell me your course and what isn’t clicking. I’ll tell you honestly whether I can help.
