Economics and Personal Finance
Supply and demand, the Fed and markets on one side; budgeting, credit, taxes, insurance and investing on the other. Students often handle one half easily and struggle with the other.
Virginia has required a full credit of Economics and Personal Finance to graduate for over a decade, so every McLean public school student has to meet it. It's a big course, half economics and half money, and I tutor it one-on-one on Zoom along with AP Business and college finance.

Bring your slides, problem sets, and your last midterm. We work from your actual course.
Supply and demand, the Fed and markets on one side; budgeting, credit, taxes, insurance and investing on the other. Students often handle one half easily and struggle with the other.
The part of the course with the most math. We make sure your student can explain why time matters more than picking the right stock.
College Board's newest AP course, with the first exam in May 2027. I tutor the subject whether or not your student's school offers the course yet.
Students home from UVA, William and Mary, Virginia Tech or anywhere else often bring their hardest class with them. Break is the time to fix it.
What a student studies in finance depends on the school and the state. Checked October 29, 2026.
Virginia public high school students who entered ninth grade in 2011 to 2012 or later need one credit in Economics and Personal Finance for a standard or advanced diploma. Schools can meet it with a full-year course or with courses aligned to the same state standards. Private schools set their own requirements.
A few of the high schools families in the area attend, named for context only. Online Finance Tutor isn't affiliated with any of them. Your assigned FCPS school depends on your address.
$1,000 invested at 7% a year grows to $1,967.15 in 10 years and $3,869.68 in 20. The second ten years add almost twice what the first ten did, because the growth itself starts growing. It's the single most useful idea in the investing unit.
Economics and personal finance use different kinds of thinking. A student who likes graphs may freeze on a loan problem, and the other way around.
Withholding, deductions and filing are on the course and rarely make intuitive sense at 16. A real pay stub fixes that fast.
How rate changes reach a car loan or a savings account is one of the harder links in the course. We connect it to numbers the student can see.
Parents usually book. Your student joins on Zoom after school or on a weekend. Send me the course, the school and what's giving your student trouble, and I'll tell you honestly whether I can help.
Send me what you're stuck on: a problem set, slides, your last midterm, a practice exam, last week's quiz.
You walk me through a problem out loud. It usually takes a few minutes to hear where the reasoning goes sideways. We fix that piece and rebuild from there, so you know why each step works.
The real test: a fresh problem with new numbers and different wording, the way a midterm would ask it, and you solve it yourself. I don't complete assignments or hand over answers. You leave able to do the work.

I’m Chi Odogwu. I have a B.S. in Business with a finance specialization from Liberty University, earned summa cum laude in three years, and a Master’s in International Economics and Finance from Brandeis. I tutored IB students in grad school, did valuation and private equity consulting at PwC, taught MBA finance at Florida State, and spent three years as an adjunct professor teaching Business Finance.
No. Every session is on Zoom, so there's no travel and scheduling fits around activities. We're on the same Eastern time zone.
Yes. Supply and demand, markets, the Fed and fiscal policy are all part of what I teach, and they connect directly to the personal finance half.
Ask the school. The course is brand new for 2026 to 2027 and each school decides whether to offer it. I tutor the subject either way, including students studying for the exam on their own.
No. I work from the teacher's materials and never complete graded work, so sessions support the class instead of replacing it.
Tutoring on concepts and practice problems is generally fine, but policies on graded work vary by course. I don't complete graded assignments. Check your syllabus's collaboration policy, and if you're unsure, ask your professor.
Tell me your course and what isn’t clicking. I’ll tell you honestly whether I can help.
