Personal Financial Literacy
Earning, spending, saving, credit, borrowing, investing and insurance. A brand-new requirement means schools are still settling on materials, so we work from your student's syllabus.
Texas students who start ninth grade in 2026 to 2027 or later must complete a half-credit personal financial literacy course to graduate, so this year's Katy ISD freshmen are the first class it applies to. I tutor that course, AP Business with Personal Finance and college finance, one-on-one over Zoom.

A middle schooler who has already worked through a budget, a pay stub and a loan payment walks into high school with a head start. A few sessions over the summer is plenty.
College Board's newest AP course, with the first exam in May 2027. I tutor the subject whether or not your student's school offers the course yet.
Students home from Texas A&M, UT, Houston or anywhere else often bring their hardest class with them. Winter break and summer are the best time to fix it before the next exam.
What a student studies in finance depends on the school and the state. Checked November 5, 2026.
Under HB 27, students entering ninth grade in 2026 to 2027 or later must complete a half-credit personal financial literacy course instead of the half credit in economics. The State Board of Education adopted matching rule changes in June 2026. Students who entered ninth grade earlier keep the rules in place when they started. The rule covers public school graduation.
A few of the public high schools that serve the area, named for context only. Online Finance Tutor isn't affiliated with any of them, and your assigned school depends on your address, so check with the district.
A $15,000 car loan at 6% APR over 60 months works out to a payment of about $290 a month. Add it up and the student pays back about $17,400, so roughly $2,400 of that is interest. Change the loan to 72 months and the payment drops but the interest grows, which is the trade-off a good financial literacy unit is built around.
A monthly payment looks small until you add it up over five years. Working a car loan line by line shows where the interest goes.
Texas has no state income tax, but federal tax, Social Security and Medicare still come out. Students are often surprised by the gap between gross and net pay.
Stocks, bonds, index funds and fees. Students hear the words everywhere and rarely get the math behind them.
Parents usually book. Your student joins on Zoom from home after school or on a weekend, around practice and games, with no drive on I-10 or the Grand Parkway. We're on Central time. Send me the course, the school and what's giving your student trouble, and I'll tell you honestly whether I can help.
Send me what you're stuck on: a problem set, slides, your last midterm, a practice exam, last week's quiz.
You walk me through a problem out loud. It usually takes a few minutes to hear where the reasoning goes sideways. We fix that piece and rebuild from there, so you know why each step works.
The real test: a fresh problem with new numbers and different wording, the way a midterm would ask it, and you solve it yourself. I don't complete assignments or hand over answers. You leave able to do the work.

No. Every session is on Zoom, so there's no travel and scheduling fits around practice, work and activities. We're on the same Central time zone.
Only to students entering ninth grade in 2026 to 2027 or later. Students who entered earlier keep the social studies requirements in place when they started.
The state lists Personal Financial Literacy and Personal Financial Literacy and Economics as the current courses that satisfy it. A newer Applied Personal Financial Literacy course is planned for classrooms starting in 2028 to 2029.
The rule covers public school graduation. Ask your student's school which course they take, and we'll work from that course and its syllabus.
Ask the school. The course is brand new for 2026 to 2027 and each school decides whether to offer it. I tutor the subject either way, including students studying for the exam on their own.
No. I work from the teacher's materials and never complete graded work, so sessions support the class instead of replacing it.
Tutoring on concepts and practice problems is generally fine, but policies on graded work vary by course. I don't complete graded assignments. Check your syllabus's collaboration policy, and if you're unsure, ask your professor.
Tell me your course and what isn’t clicking. I’ll tell you honestly whether I can help.
