South Carolina · Online tutoring

Online finance tutoring for families in Fort Mill and Tega Cay.

South Carolina students who started ninth grade in 2023 to 2024 or later need a half unit in personal finance to graduate, so the class of 2027 is the first. I tutor that course, AP Business with Personal Finance and college finance, one-on-one over Zoom.

Required in South Carolina

Personal Finance

Bank accounts, credit scores, debt, loans, insurance, taxes and saving. Students who want more than a pass, or who are stuck on the interest math, get the same topics one-on-one.

Getting ahead

Finance before the course starts

The state sets no grade for the course, so students take it at different times. A student who has already worked through a budget and a loan payment starts it with a head start.

AP course

AP® Business with Personal Finance

College Board's newest AP course, with the first exam in May 2027. I tutor the subject whether or not your student's school offers the course yet.

Home from college

Corporate finance over break

Students home from Clemson, the University of South Carolina or anywhere else often bring their hardest class with them. Break is the best time to fix it before the next exam.

South Carolina · state graduation requirements

Half a unit in personal finance, on top of economics

The South Carolina Department of Education says the personal finance graduation requirement began in 2023 to 2024 with the entering freshman class, and students have until graduation to earn it. Economics is still required separately. Personal Finance earns the half unit, and Advanced Personal Finance or Financial Fitness earn a full unit.

A car loan example

Borrow $12,000 for a used car at 6% a year over 60 months and the payment is about $232 a month. Over five years that adds up to roughly $13,919, so close to $1,919 is interest. Stretch the loan to 72 months and the payment drops, but the interest grows. That trade-off shows up on almost every personal finance test.

Loan payments

Why a longer loan means a smaller payment and a bigger total. We build the comparison by hand before touching a calculator.

Credit scores

What moves a score, what a missed payment does, and why a first card should be used a little and paid in full.

Taxes and paychecks

Gross pay, net pay, withholding and a W-4 look nothing like math class. Once a student has worked through one real pay stub, the unit gets much easier.

For parents

Parents usually book. Your student joins on Zoom from home after school or on a weekend, with no drive on I-77 or Highway 160. Send me the course name, the school and what's giving your student trouble, and I'll tell you honestly whether I can help.

How a session works

Diagnosis first. Then the fix.

  1. 01

    Before we meet

Send me what you're stuck on: a problem set, slides, your last midterm, a practice exam, last week's quiz.

  2. 02

    On Zoom

You walk me through a problem out loud. It usually takes a few minutes to hear where the reasoning goes sideways. We fix that piece and rebuild from there, so you know why each step works.

  3. 03

    Before we finish

The real test: a fresh problem with new numbers and different wording, the way a midterm would ask it, and you solve it yourself. I don't complete assignments or hand over answers. You leave able to do the work.

Questions

Before you book.

Do you tutor in person in Fort Mill?

No. Every session is on Zoom, so there's no travel and scheduling fits around practice, work and activities. We're on the same Eastern time zone.

When does my student take the personal finance course?

The state doesn't set a grade. Students have until graduation to earn the half unit, so ask your school's counselor when your student is scheduled.

Does a business finance class count in South Carolina?

The state's guidance says some older business courses count only through 2025 to 2026. After that it accepts Personal Finance, Advanced Personal Finance or Financial Fitness. Check with your school before choosing a course.

Does the requirement apply to my older student?

The requirement began with students entering ninth grade in 2023 to 2024. A student who entered earlier followed the rules in place at that time.

Does my student's school offer AP Business with Personal Finance?

Ask the school. The course is brand new for 2026 to 2027 and each school decides whether to offer it. I tutor the subject either way, including students studying for the exam on their own.

Will tutoring get in the way of my student's teacher?

No. I work from the teacher's materials and never complete graded work, so sessions support the class instead of replacing it.

Is tutoring allowed under my school's honor code?

Tutoring on concepts and practice problems is generally fine, but policies on graded work vary by course. I don't complete graded assignments. Check your syllabus's collaboration policy, and if you're unsure, ask your professor.
