Business Finance I · formerly FIN 331

FINA 3000 tutoring for Ole Miss students.

FINA 3000 Business Finance I is the Ole Miss course on financial analysis, investment decisions, cost of capital, and how companies raise money. If an older advisor sheet or a friend's notes say FIN 331, that's the same class under its new number.

The course

FINA 3000 · Business Finance I

Three credits. The catalog calls it the principles of business finance, with emphasis on financial analysis, investment decisions, cost of capital, and procurement of funds. Until the switch to four-digit numbers, it was FIN 331.

Before you take it

Prerequisites

ACCY 2010, ECON 2020 and ECON 2030, two math courses from the catalog's list, and ECON 2300 or BUSN 2300. The list has changed over the years, so check the catalog edition for your entry term.

After it

What it unlocks

Most upper-level finance courses list FINA 3000 as a prerequisite, including FINA 3330 Financial Markets and Institutions, FINA 3340 Investments, FINA 3380 Intermediate Financial Management, and FINA 4610 Financial Statement Analysis. FINA 4999A asks for a C or better in it.

These free walkthroughs and calculators cover the calculations that show up again and again in an intro business finance course. Work one before a session and bring whatever didn't make sense.

Where students get stuck.

Financial analysis

Computing a ratio takes one line. Saying what it tells you about the company is where the points are, so we practice the reading part using the statements from your own problem sets.

Investment decisions

NPV, IRR, and payback each answer a slightly different question. Once you see why NPV wins when they disagree, capital budgeting stops feeling like three formulas to memorize.

Cost of capital and raising funds

This is where the course connects. Bond and stock pricing give you the cost of debt and equity, those combine into WACC, and WACC becomes the hurdle rate for every project. We draw that chain until you can rebuild it on a blank page.

Who takes FINA 3000

FINA 3000 sits in front of most upper-level finance courses at Ole Miss, so anyone headed toward a finance major meets it early. General business majors have a lighter option, GBUS 3300 Essentials of Finance, and the catalog lets FINA 3000 count in its place. You can't get degree credit for both, so check with your advisor before you register.

How a session works

Diagnosis first. Then the fix.

  1. 01

    Before we meet

Send me what you're stuck on: a problem set, slides, your last midterm, a practice exam, last week's quiz.

  2. 02

    On Zoom

You walk me through a problem out loud. It usually takes a few minutes to hear where the reasoning goes sideways. We fix that piece and rebuild from there, so you know why each step works.

  3. 03

    Before we finish

The real test: a fresh problem with new numbers and different wording, the way a midterm would ask it, and you solve it yourself. I don't complete assignments or hand over answers. You leave able to do the work.

Questions

Before you book.

Is FINA 3000 the same course as FIN 331?

Yes. When Ole Miss moved its catalog to four-digit numbers, Business Finance I kept its title and description under FINA 3000. Old notes and advisor sheets that say FIN 331 are talking about the same class.

I'm a general business major. FINA 3000 or GBUS 3300?

Ask your advisor, since it depends on where you're headed. What the catalog says is that FINA 3000 can count in place of GBUS 3300 and that you can't get degree credit for both. I can help with either one.

Which calculator should I bring?

Check your syllabus. I couldn't find a published calculator rule for the course, and sections can differ. We practice on whatever model you're allowed to use on the exam.

How often should we meet?

Most students do one session a week through the term, plus an extra one before each exam. If an exam is close, we start with the problems you're losing points on now.

Is tutoring allowed under my school's honor code?

Tutoring on concepts and practice problems is generally fine, but policies on graded work vary by course. I don't complete graded assignments. Check your syllabus's collaboration policy, and if you're unsure, ask your professor.
