The course

FINANC 3000 · Corporate Finance

Three credit hours. The catalog describes financial decision-making in a corporate environment, covering the time value of money, capital budgeting, cost of capital, working capital management, and financial instruments issued by the firm.

Before you take it

Prerequisites and corequisite

45 completed semester hours, STAT 2500 or an approved statistics combination, ECONOM 1014, and ECONOM 1015 or 1051H. Accounting (ACCTCY 2027, 2037, or 2137H) can be taken at the same time.

What stands out

A statistics prerequisite

Statistics is on the list, so the course assumes you can handle averages, variance, and basic probability when risk and return come up.

Try these before the first exam

Cost of capital is the topic that pulls the others together, so the WACC guide and calculator are the best places to see how the pieces connect. The NPV guide covers the capital budgeting that comes first.

Where students get stuck.

Corequisite accounting

If you take accounting at the same time, you meet balance sheet ideas in finance before accounting has covered them. We fill in the gaps you need so the finance doesn't stall.

Cost of capital

This is where the earlier topics join up. Pricing bonds and stocks gives you the cost of debt and equity, and those become the rate used to judge projects. We draw the chain so each step has a reason.

Instruments the firm issues

Bonds, preferred stock, and common stock each carry different rights and costs. Exam questions test whether you can tell them apart, so we practice with side-by-side comparisons.

Who takes FINANC 3000

FINANC 3000 is the corporate finance course in the Missouri catalog and sits behind 45 completed hours, economics, and statistics, so it usually arrives in the second or third year. Your degree audit shows where it falls for your major.

How a session works

Diagnosis first. Then the fix.

  1. 01

    Before we meet

Send me what you're stuck on: a problem set, slides, your last midterm, a practice exam, last week's quiz.

  2. 02

    On Zoom

You walk me through a problem out loud. It usually takes a few minutes to hear where the reasoning goes sideways. We fix that piece and rebuild from there, so you know why each step works.

  3. 03

    Before we finish

The real test: a fresh problem with new numbers and different wording, the way a midterm would ask it, and you solve it yourself. I don't complete assignments or hand over answers. You leave able to do the work.
