Financial Management

FIN 3123 tutoring for Mississippi State students.

FIN 3123 Financial Management is the Mississippi State course on how a business analyzes its numbers, plans, and decides where money comes from and where it goes. It stacks on economics, accounting, and business statistics, so the first weeks often feel like a review that suddenly turns into new material.

The course

FIN 3123 · Financial Management

Three credit hours of lecture. The catalog describes it as a study of the objectives, tools, methods, and problems of financial management, covering financial analysis, planning and control, sources and uses of funds, capital budgeting decisions, and working capital.

Before you take it

Prerequisites

EC 2123, ACC 2013, and BQA 2113. That mix means you arrive with some economics, the accounting vocabulary, and the statistics from the business quantitative analysis course, and the class expects all three.

Where students struggle

Where the points go

Capital budgeting and the sources and uses of funds are the heavy parts. A capital budgeting question can run a full page, and one wrong cash flow in the first line carries through every later step.

Warm up on the calculations FIN 3123 uses

Every exam in this course eventually asks you to turn a business situation into cash flows. The NPV guide and calculator below let you test your own numbers, and the midterm guide shows what a typical first exam asks for.

Where students get stuck.

Analysis versus planning

Ratio analysis looks backward at what happened, while planning looks forward at what a company needs. Students mix the two up on exams. We practice taking one set of statements through both questions.

Capital budgeting cash flows

Before NPV or IRR, you need the right cash flows: after-tax operating cash, depreciation shields, working capital swings, and the end-of-project effects. We build a checklist you can run in your head on every problem.

Working capital

Cash, receivables, inventory, and payables each have their own tradeoffs, and the exam asks you to decide, not just calculate. We practice explaining the choice in a sentence after the numbers.

Who takes FIN 3123

FIN 3123 is the Financial Management course in the Mississippi State catalog, and the three prerequisites tell you it sits after the first economics, accounting, and business statistics classes. Check your degree audit for where it falls in your plan, since requirements vary by major.

How a session works

Diagnosis first. Then the fix.

  1. 01

    Before we meet

Send me what you're stuck on: a problem set, slides, your last midterm, a practice exam, last week's quiz.

  2. 02

    On Zoom

You walk me through a problem out loud. It usually takes a few minutes to hear where the reasoning goes sideways. We fix that piece and rebuild from there, so you know why each step works.

  3. 03

    Before we finish

The real test: a fresh problem with new numbers and different wording, the way a midterm would ask it, and you solve it yourself. I don't complete assignments or hand over answers. You leave able to do the work.

Questions

Before you book.

What does FIN 3123 cover at Mississippi State?

The catalog lists financial analysis, planning, control, sources and uses of funds, capital budgeting decisions, and working capital management. Your instructor decides the order and the weight of each part.

Do you know my professor's exams?

I don't name or rate professors, since they change from term to term. What helps is your syllabus and any graded quizzes, because those show what your section actually tests.

Which calculator do I need?

Check your syllabus. I couldn't find a published calculator rule, and sections can differ. We practice on the model you are allowed to use.

Is tutoring allowed under my school's honor code?

Tutoring on concepts and practice problems is generally fine, but policies on graded work vary by course. I don't complete graded assignments. Check your syllabus's collaboration policy, and if you're unsure, ask your professor.
