Before you take it

Prerequisites

An accounting course from the catalog's list, which includes ACCT 2110, 2117, 2810, 2817, 2813, 3110, and 3113. Which one you have depends on your program.

Which number

FINC 3610 or FINC 3810

Business majors count FINC 3610 and non-business majors count FINC 3810. There is also an honors version, FINC 3617, for students in the Honors College. Make sure you're registered for the one that fits you.

Run these before our first session

Time value of money, valuation, and capital budgeting are the catalog's three headline topics, and each has a matching guide below. Read them in that order, since each one uses the one before it.

Where students get stuck.

Thinking like a manager

The course frames every topic as a decision someone has to make. A problem that ends with a number but no recommendation is only half answered, and exams reward the recommendation.

Valuation

Valuing a bond or a stock is the time value of money applied to a stream of payments. Students who rush past the first chapter pay for it here, so we go back to rebuild the base.

Capital budgeting

NPV is the main idea, and the catalog lists it as a named topic. We drill the cash-flow setup so you spend exam time on the decision, not the arithmetic.

Who takes FINC 3610

Business majors take FINC 3610, and non-business majors who need a finance course take FINC 3810 instead. The catalog lets either count, but not both for the same requirement, so check which your program asks for.

How a session works

Diagnosis first. Then the fix.

  1. 01

    Before we meet

Send me what you're stuck on: a problem set, slides, your last midterm, a practice exam, last week's quiz.

  2. 02

    On Zoom

You walk me through a problem out loud. It usually takes a few minutes to hear where the reasoning goes sideways. We fix that piece and rebuild from there, so you know why each step works.

  3. 03

    Before we finish

The real test: a fresh problem with new numbers and different wording, the way a midterm would ask it, and you solve it yourself. I don't complete assignments or hand over answers. You leave able to do the work.

Questions

Before you book.

Should I take FINC 3610 or FINC 3810?

The catalog says FINC 3610 counts for business majors and FINC 3810 for non-business majors. Your advisor can confirm which your program wants.

Is there an honors version?

Yes, FINC 3617, open to Honors College students. I can help with the same core topics.

What math do I need?

Algebra, plus comfort with a financial calculator. If the calculator is new to you, the first session is mostly keystrokes and checking answers.

Is tutoring allowed under my school's honor code?

Tutoring on concepts and practice problems is generally fine, but policies on graded work vary by course. I don't complete graded assignments. Check your syllabus's collaboration policy, and if you're unsure, ask your professor.
