The course

FINN 20403 · Principles of Finance

Three hours. The catalog describes an introduction to the financial system and financial management: the role of financial intermediaries and markets for fixed income and equity securities, how interest rates are determined and assets valued, and how firms manage resources and create value through investment and financing decisions.

Before you take it

Prerequisites, Walton students

ISYS 10303, ACCT 20103, and ECON 21003 or ECON 22003, each with a grade of C or better.

Before you take it

Prerequisites, other majors

A statistics course from the catalog's list, plus ACCT 20103 and an economics course. The catalog gives the full list, so check it for your major.

Get comfortable with the core calculations

The valuation half of this course is all discounting, and the bond guide shows it with a real coupon schedule. The NPV calculator is useful for the investment-decision questions near the end.

Where students get stuck.

The system, then the math

Many students expect a calculation course and meet a chapter on markets and intermediaries first. We connect that background to the valuation math so it doesn't feel like two courses.

Interest rates

The catalog says the course covers how rates are determined. That means the pieces behind a rate: inflation, risk, and time. We make it concrete with small examples.

Create value

The course ends on firms creating value through investment and financing choices. It is the same NPV idea in a bigger setting, and we revisit it until the logic holds.

Who takes FINN 20403

How a session works

Diagnosis first. Then the fix.

  1. 01

    Before we meet

Send me what you're stuck on: a problem set, slides, your last midterm, a practice exam, last week's quiz.

  2. 02

    On Zoom

You walk me through a problem out loud. It usually takes a few minutes to hear where the reasoning goes sideways. We fix that piece and rebuild from there, so you know why each step works.

  3. 03

    Before we finish

The real test: a fresh problem with new numbers and different wording, the way a midterm would ask it, and you solve it yourself. I don't complete assignments or hand over answers. You leave able to do the work.

Questions

Before you book.

Can non-business majors take FINN 20403?

The catalog lists a separate set of prerequisites for non-business majors, so yes. Check the catalog list for your major.

Do I need a C or better in the prerequisites?

For Walton College students, the catalog says each prerequisite needs a C or better.

Is this more about math or concepts?

Both. The catalog lists markets, rates, and valuation, so expect concept questions alongside calculations.

Is tutoring allowed under my school's honor code?

Tutoring on concepts and practice problems is generally fine, but policies on graded work vary by course. I don't complete graded assignments. Check your syllabus's collaboration policy, and if you're unsure, ask your professor.
