Understanding taxes before your first job

A plain explanation of withholding, tax forms, deductions versus credits and gig income, with simulations from official sources.

The idea in plain words

Taxes feel confusing because a few ideas are stacked together. Your employer withholds tax during the year, the W-2 reports it, and a return settles the difference. A deduction lowers the income that is taxed, while a credit lowers the tax itself, dollar for dollar. Tax rates are marginal, meaning a higher rate applies only to the part of income inside a higher bracket, not to all of it. Gig and freelance work usually arrives on a 1099 and often means you handle your own tax payments.

Your plan

  1. Follow one paycheckSee where withholding goes and how a return settles it.
  2. Tell deductions from creditsWork an example of each.
  3. Try a gig-work scenarioSee how self-employment changes the picture.
